If it only does it when the tank is full or almost full, then it could be the flexible filler hose that connects the tank to the filler neck, the rubber seal that seals the fuel gauge sender into the top of the tank, or one of the breather pipes perished or rusted through.

I've even heard of holes accidentally drilled into the top of the tank when people have been drilling into the top of the rear "Hump" when attempting to fit camper furniture.

In any case, it probably means having to remove the tank to inspect and rectify any problems, which, if you read your Haynes manual, you will see is a fairly involved job.

It's not something you should ignore, though, otherwise you risk your van being yet another black charred type 2 at the side of the Motorway.
