I've just read another interesting newsletter (it's nice to read them when you no longer have to write them) and was enjoying it until I read Kevin's article on Dub Freeze. He complains about the number of watercooled cars in the show and shine.I thought our club was as it states on the website "We cover all Volkswagen models from all years,
and we welcome all VW owners and enthusiasts" so why are people in our 'ALL TYPES OF VW' club complaining about a different type of VW to their own cherished one? I Love all VWs...it just so happens that I own a watercooled one.I enjoyed seeing both air and watercooled examples at the show. For some time a small number of senior members of the club have been making us watercooled owners feel left out(not Kevin even though he wrote the article). So much so that our willing membership secretary who was voted in last April was urged to resign by our current one (an air cooled enthusiast) thus making a farce of the comment on the back of the newsletter about positions being open to anyone with enthusiasm.I was even totally ignored by one of these senior members when i said hello at the show as was another watercooled member.Even our stickers are now out of date (beetle and camper) They should have both air and water cooled cars on them or no cars at all!And they should be small enough to fit in something other than a campers window. And finally...why was there a 2 page advert for BUS types show and only one inch for GTi show? I realise that air cooled owners must outweigh watercooled but this is making us a minority and creating a divide.I know I'm adding to the unrest but one of the reasons i(and other water cooled owners) didn't volunteer for the committe again this year was because of this divide and the treatment of our previous membership secretary. I'm sorry but I felt this had to be said and must stress that this is my opinion and I'm speaking for myself.

Question 1: Any idea how much i could expect to pay (ball park figure) to get a camper converted?

Any information and guidence appreciated.

A friend has a 1972 1300 VW Beetle that he needs off his hands (or drive more specifically!). It needs some work for an MOT, and is probably a worthwhile project for an enthusiast. I'm sure we're not talking much money at all, but you would need to tow away as it has been stood a year. Tyres are inflated tho, and brakes seem to work. It had all new wings 2 years ago.
This car isn't mine, but you could email interest to me at acattanach@btinternet.com and I will pass details on. The car is near Chorley (Clayton Brook).

Can anyone help ?

I've been driving VW's for far too long it seems.
I attempted to change the speedo cable on my golf after looking at the Haynes manual, seeing the job was rated as a novice could do, on the little spanners rating that they put on the page to inspire your confidence.
I undid the little bolt that secures the cable to the gear box only to find that it is stuck in tight.

No amount of face shaking pulling can free it.

Is this common and can anyone help before i pull one of those funny muscles again.

Thanks

Can the head gasket be replaced without replacing any others?

SCIROCCO MKII 1.8-8V
I'm investigating a water loss problem I believe to be a blown head gasket...can't find any cooling leaks, engine gets about 20 miles to one full expansion tank, then goes dry, over heats.

Don't see any steam from the exhaust, no water in the oil.

If my hunch is right about the head gasket, when I take off the head to replace the gasket will I need to get other gaskets?

Two type 2 campers, 1 is taxed & mot'd, it has a very solid body-4 berth-pop top. its had lots of work done-but it has no engine.
The other camper is a westphalia-mint interior, like new-mot failure-good engine. BOTH would make one good camper-will not split.

I have a Mk3 Golf 1.8 with 130,000+ on the clock. The front springs seem very soft and tired. The ride height also now seems a bit lower than it should be.

Is there an inexpensive way of stiffening the front end and restoring the original ride height?

Author:
Linsey
[Edit]

Date Posted: 01:21:31 08/21/03 Thu

I have a 1971 K reg 1200cc Beetle. On Sunday night, driving up the motorway I reached 75mph (I've been told not to take it over 65). Suddenly the little red light labelled G (left light) on the dashboard came on. Then the other red light came on and the engine cut out. As I pulled into the hard shoulder, and turned everything off (lights etc), I realised there was smoke filling the car, coming from under the back seat. There was no smoke coming from the engine. An hour later (waiting for AA) I tried to turn the engine on again and nothing happened, and was towed home. On Monday night I decided to try and turn the engine on again and it miraculously started up and sounded fine. I've checked under the back seat for scorch marks or any signs of problems (the smoke smelt electrical not rubbery) and there's nothing. The car appears to run fine, but I've only taken it round the block. However, the little red G light remains on all the time, despite getting up to around 20mph. Another thing, is when I first turned the headlights on on Sunday night, there was a smell of burning, but this either went away or I got used to it. I'd been driving on the motorway for around 1 and half hours before the engine died.
Is it ok to drive the car? Does anyone know what could be wrong, or why there was smoke and no sign of anything now? There was someone sitting on the back seat at the time - perhaps this could have affected the battery? Help!

Ive just started a new site, and as you can see i have started low, hoping that if i get alot of vw camper enthuisiastics like you lot, it will maybe take off. If you are interest just have a look at the site. the idea is that people like you send in pictures( if you have one) and a piece of writing. The piece of writing is just a piece telling everbody a bit about your van and what you have done in it( where have you been or visited? Or, where are you planning to go?)
If you dont fancy this at least have a look, and spread the word about it, as it maybe the type of site somebody is looking for. The sites address is... www.vwcampers.vze.com

Hi I'm new on the dubbing scene and am trying to restore my 72 bug. I would like to put a kinda power plant in the rear, but I have no idea what size of engine to go for and what would be best to suit my needs, which are: 1, its going to be a daily driver 2, I would like to get reasonable mpg 3, good acceleration 4, be able to cruise on the motorways a the same speeds as the rest of the population!!
I also have no idea of which carb to put on the engine, or what they actually do!!
Also would I have to get a different gearbox, mine currently is one form a 1300 bug, say one from a 1500 bug??
So if anyone could give my any hints or useful information I would be very grateful.

Date Posted: 18:48:46 05/26/03 Mon

After reconnecting my speedo cluster in my 72 vw bus I noticed the smell of electrical burning. Anyway, I believe that I fried my wiper switch. I ordered a replacement but I want to make sure I don't fry the next one. Any suggestions on what to do? I notice two wires that are not connected in the over populated community of wires. One is brown with a connecting lead and the second is greenish with a connecting lead. I don't know where these go. I think I may have disconnected these when trying to connect my speedo cable to the speedometer cluster. I noticed that there is a connector that is missing a wire on my windshield wiper switch but I am not sure which of the two belongs. When I connected the greenish wire, I blew a fuse. When I connected the brownish wire, it seems to operate the electronic fuel pump....Help.....
Have any of you ever experienced a similar situation?

I am open to suggestions.

Thank you from California

I've got a unique trailer that I built a few years ago. It is the front end of a 1302 that is towed backwards. Unfortunately I no longer have room to store it and I, sadly, have to part with it. I am prepared to accept offers for it because it's so hard to value.

I also have a 1973 tax exempt camper van which i am selling. It is being used to donate some parts to a recently acquired Crew Cab but all parts from the doors back, except the engine, are available. It has a full camping interior including a cooker and sink and and unused hammocks.

All this has got to go so will be very cheap.

If you are interested ring me on 07990 575725 and I'll be able to talk to you some more.

VW BEETLE, 1500, 1969 G. TAX EXEMPT. MOT JAN 04. TAX DEC 03. FORSYTHIA YELLOW.

This was Sheila's everyday transport until recently and as such had rear seat belts and disc brakes. The suspension has been sorted and put back to the proper ride height, also, new components totalling over £1,000 have been fitted on the car since purchase in March 2001.

The car was originally restored 3 years ago by a gentleman from Warrington for his daughter at a cost of over £6,000, the daughter duly decided that the car was'nt for her, and so it was sold to Halifax beetles and the Warrington gent ended up over £4,000 out of pocket. We met said soon after buying the car from Halifax beetles and he gave us all the receipts he had, the AWESOME interior alone cost over £750.

The car drives lovely and only needs proper German door seals and new door cards as the others have started to disintegrate due to moisture getting past inferior door seals.

All receipts and history file can be viewed prior to any test drive, this car is well worth the asking price and is only for sale because Sheila now has a bigger car for the school run and is no longer being used enough to justify leaving it on the drive, i believe that cars should be used and if we are'nt using it, then maybe someone else should own it.
ASKING PRICE IS £2,800 O.N.O.

I have a Lreg tax exempt bay window camper for sale. The van is MOTd until September, but is very scraggy looking. It has been used recently as a load lugger, but the camping interior is all there. The van will be sold minus the engine, and is therefore very cheap at £300ono. The van will not win any prizes, it is green with green tinted windows. With an engine it is ok, but someone may want parts for their own van. It has a good tow bar and a good vw awning.Make an offer, or come and view. It needs to go, as space is required.

My VW Nova kit came with a brand new unused UVA rear disc conversion.

The problem is it's 12 years old, so I'd really like to replace the seals before I connect it all up, otherwise I'll probably be heading for Leak city.

The only problem is I don't know what car the calipers were originally used on, though I'd suspect it's something from the VW range.

Hi -

I've just got hold of a pair of modified 041 heads (came included with carbs & other stuff I bought)

One head is good, the other is cracked between the valves.

One head is no good to anyone, so could anyone out there help me by either selling me a similair spec 041, so I have a pair - or does someone else want to buy my good one to make up a pair for themselves ?

Here's the spec. -

41 mm inlets, 35 mm exhausts, light port & polish, opened up for 94mm pistons, spark plug hole in original location.
Stainless valves, dual valve springs, cromoly retainers.

I reckon about £50 either way for a good head. As long as the valve sizes are the same and the head hasn't been seriously ported out, then I don't mind, I can change the rest.

I know it's a long shot, but if you don't ask, you don't get !

the van was originaly a hard panel van and has been converted before it came to england in 1983.
does anyone have any idea what this was? - we think it might be an add on but it looks like it has always been there

I require two 1600cc cylinder beetle cylinder heads with or without valves. Would pay £10 each or swap for nearside door fully glazed, slight surface rust but solid. Also have other items such as 1200cc gear box, crankshaft heads.swing axle drive shafts etc.

Hi Boys & Girls -

Here's the MK1 events list for 2003. It's not set in stone just yet, but most of it should be pretty accurate.

There's more to be added yet, when I get the dates, but for now bookmark the link below -

Due to various problems - BT internet in their infinite wisdom have decided to block my email & my webspace which holds the New Lancs club site. Anything sent to me at my usual email address from Sat 28th Sept onwards I can't access. If you've sent me anything important since then, please can you resend it to - whippy@newlancsvwclub.co.uk

The club website has been relocated to :- http://www.users.totalise.co.uk/~dave.whipp/club/ for the time being.
It should still be accessible from www.newlancsvwclub.co.uk though.

Sorry for the problems - I'll try to get everything back to normal ASAP.

Hi everyone. Got my first Beetle, a '72 1302S, and so far so good. What I'm after are general tips for keeping it alive.

The engines ok (although it cuts out regularly - probably due to short journeys) but I'll need to get some bodywork done (but not for 18 months or so - cash). I don't have a dry store so I'm looking for tips to keep the body work ok.
It's fairly reasonable, although the rear passenger side wing is developing rust after being loosened when the wheel fell off, so I know that needs replacing.

Also, does anyone have details of meets in the North West coming up this year, I'm in Waterloo near Liverpool so fairly central for the North West.

Finally, I need a pair of running boards and fixings and hope to avoid buying new ones, so if anyone knows of any, please let me know.

Feel free to e-mail me and I'll try to respond - I'm using my daughters pc as I'm having trouble with my own - something wrong with IE I think!!

Thanks again

Whilst on my way back from Tatton Park I was on the M60 near the Trafford shopping centre (dont ask what I was doing there I got lost getting off the park). I was in the middle lane do about 65 mph when I lost all engine power. I pulled over to the hard sholder and my buggy stalled. I sat there for a few minuets whilst I checked the usual (fuel in the tank, fuel getting to the pump) everything seemed fine, but the buggy did not restart.

I called the RAC out (as I am a member) and the man that came out couldnt tell me what was wrong.

When the key is turn it sounds like power gets to the starter motor but can not turn it or turns the starter and then nothing else happens. When a battery was put across mine and the key was turned still nothing happend.

The best idea the RAC man had was that the earth from the engine to the body (what to a fibre glass buggy body, I dont think so, I think he means the chassis), but if this is so why was the buggy alright on the way to Tatton?

Can anyone better the RAC man?

Gavin
