There have been many reports of late model VW's cutting out for no apparant reason, the fault does not even record in the Engine management log, and has even baffled the VW dealers. However, it is known that a batch of relays all have an internal intermittant fault, it's a dry joint on the "X" contact, which cuts the power to the ignition.
When it has cooled, it re-makes contact, and the fault disappears. It doesn't record this as a fault, (because it's the same as switching off the ignition). Solution is to replace the relay, (worth a try anyway), I believe it is Relay 101.
