Hi,
It's hard to determine what those parts are, from your description. What kind of spring, (coil, flat 'M' shape or brass leaf ?), how big is it ? as for the "metal U shape", how big is that ? I doubt that these things would cause total failure of both indicators and wipers, that's more likely to be an electrical or wiring fault, changing the ignition switch can affect all the wiring in the column, it's too easy to trap the wires, and cause a short circuit which would have blown the fuses, check them first.
Cheers
Laurence
