Had the same problem on my MK2 Scirocco. Pulled it to bits to lube / try and see what was wrong but a couple of plastic clips broke while geting it out of the car. I think the original problem was worn slider guide blocks but I ended up putting it back in the car unfixed. Now it will still tilt, but it won't slide.

Perhaps you could liberate a good one from a breakers. Failing that, I'd say leave it alone or pay the dealer.
