Problems with engine on beetle

Recently I've been have problems with the running of my 1970 beetle, it's not starting first time like it always did, the engine sounds a bit off and today it cut out completley at a roundabout!! I eventually got it turning over (which took a couple of minutes but seemed like forever!!), but everytime I had to stop at lights I had to keep my foot on the gas so it wouldn't cut out again.When I eventually got it home, everything in the engine bay looked fine, I left it for a couple of hours then started it up and white smoke came out the exhaust!! I've had a word with my Dad who seems to think I may have a blockage in the fuel line.

Can anyone help!!??
