If it's only seeping a little oil it isn't fatal as long as you keep topping up the oil on a regular basis until you can change the seal. IE your gearbox should stay working fine as long as it's got enough oil in it.

Economy works out like this -

Cost of getting seal replaced VS. cost & hassle of keeping the gear oil constantly topped up or trashing your gearbox if you don't, plus hassle of leaked oil on the drive or street / all over engine / smell of the stuff on your clothes / compensation claim against you when someone slips in it or bill from council when they have to clean it up. OK - worst scenario but you see where I'm going...

The seal will only cost 2 or 3 quid. You can probably buy a Haynes manual for £10 (or less used)
If you've got the tools do it yourself. - The best way IMHO -
