Thanks for that BB. At the moment I am working (temping) for loss adjusters for the insurance business, and am wondering what fit of madness prompted me to answer the email I got on Dec 23 asking if I could work on Dec 24. I said yes, as it was only for 3 weeks, but I'm still there and there is no let up in the sheer manic pace of the job. Basically it's because of the really hard cold days and nights that we had in Dec/Jan, where so many thousands of people had burst pipes and house floods, plus of course house fires, thefts, vehicles running into houses and factories (how can you not see a huge great warehouse?), some of the vehicle damage has been deliberate, like some demented man driving his large vehicle into the side of his ex's house, you know, little things like that, and now the new claims are going in to the insurance companies for this weekend's storms and winds, so things are still going to be busy. The office I'm working for has taken in 6 months' work in 6 weeks, only 6 people in the office, 7 if you include me, 2 of whom have been off sick, one is on holiday, one had to go to Yorkshire last week and on Friday one had to go out on an emergency call out himself although he is supposed to be office based, leavng the full time administrator, who has only been there 3 months but who does have some insurance experience albeit in the motor side of it, and me, who is winging it, with the little legs paddling away like crazy under the water. I did manage to get an hour's break last week, that was 15 mins on Monday and 45 on Friday, lunch times are things people talk of longingly and you try to answer the phone between mouthfuls of sandwich and gulps of coffee. At least I haven't earned enough yet this year to pay tax, and being over 60 I don't pay NI, so what I earn is all mine, mine I tell you! You do need a thick skin though, particularly when you get an Asian woman screaming at you over the phone like a banshee, accusing your company of stealing the money that the insurance company is going to pay her for her tv, as if we would all be prepared to go to gaol for £500, and generally being totally unpleasant. Such is life though. I don't think I could cope with going round to people and asking them if they have completed their census forms and checking that they have put in all their financial details etc as well (any questions like that will be answered by the statement that the Inland Revenue has all the relevant details and we are not prepared to otherwise divulge them on a document that is accessible by unknown quantities of people)(the worse they can do is take me to court and try to fine me, but I shall stick to my guns, the government already has that info somewhere). Feeling a bit bolshie about the census as they are getting too far away from the original one of finding out how many people there are. Too Big Brother for my liking. So if you hear of some feisty Welsh woman being arrested in Norfolk and dragged from her home kicking and screaming for not answereing in full some of the census questions, you will know who it is, and taking that into account, I can hardly demand from people that they complete the form if I'm not prepared to do so. Hope you do well with it though.

Gilly
