My dad's Tannoy system worked well although it was a one-way affair. From the kitchen he could tell us to get out of our scratchers (beds). My brother and I shared a bedroom and my dad installed a speaker from a truck dashboard, housed in a wee hardboard box covered in maroon vinyl seat covering, also intended for trucks.

I think my dad inherited a gene for tinkering from his dad. My grandad, a coal miner, built his own ham radio set, distilled illicit whisky during the war and kept a pistol beside his bed, for reasons I'm not sure of. Those were the days!

The clinging of the shower curtain when the water is flowing is interesting since we had a similar contraption in our bathroom, built by my dad! I think it's due to the Venturi Effect, where a jet of water drags the surrounding air with it causing a local drop in pressure and dragging the curtain inwards. I've used a Venturi pump attached to a tap in chemistry labs to pull a partial vacuum in a filtering apparatus. It works well but uses a lot of water. Jings, I hadn't thought of using a shower curtain to demonstrate the effect! I just need to check that an alternative explanation involving static electricity isn't more plausible.

BB
