Subject: The Steam Age

Ah yes, the Age of Steam, a time gone by. I was thinking about it while listening to our new whistling kettle in the caravan. But then it occurred to me that we're still in The Steam Age. Most of our electricity is generated by steam-driven turbines. The coal, oil, gas or nuclear fuel heats water to make steam.

An electrified railway system gets its energy from the steam-driven turbines in the power stations, so things haven't changed that much from the days of steam trains.

We may be too dependent on fossil fuels for power generation, but it's our dependence on steam that is at the heart of the problem.

I'm going to have a good think about this in the garden tomorrow, with plenty of beer and a large Fidel cigar. Maximum concentration will be required to avoid drifting into dreamland, spilling the beer on the dog and setting fire to my splendid new summer shorts. Solving the world's energy problems is not without risk.
