Subject: The Illusionist - another reason tae greet
In reply to: Gilly 's message, "greetin like a bairn" on 22:18:24 08/30/10 Mon

Yesterday I watched The Illusionist at a community arts centre cinema in Cardiff. None of the big cinemas in the area are showing this marvellous film. It's a cartoon, or "animated feature", based on a 1956 script by Jacques Tati, the French comedy actor and director. The illusionist of the title is a French stage magician suffering from dwindling music hall audiences in Paris. He goes to Scotland to see if a new audience will appreciate his skills, and there the real magic begins........

This film is full of love for Edinburgh as it was in the 1950s and the attention to detail is astonishing, right down to the more melancholy and darker aspects of the city and its inhabitants.

The ending made me greet (though I tried to disguise it as itchy eyelids of course).

Go and see it if you can. It's a beautifully hand-drawn cartoon, not computer-generated; and all the warmer and more human for it. If you know Edinburgh you'll recognise the locations so skillfully depicted.

BB
