Alright lads, I was in Glenochil Oct-Dec 1975 and had a right hard time with the screws. They hit me from day one, had me down as a different surname for the first 3 weeks, (resulting in me not answering the roll call and the hassle that caused), tried to make me eat dry bread after my dinner was finished one day (didn't eat it!) which led to a severe beating, bedblock and room etc totally trashed on my return from the dinner hall! I eventually lost 3 days remission for apparently trying to 'escape' during a black-out! The screw responsible was Woods - he was outside our cells listening to some banter from me and a guy Billy Dunlop (from Drumchapel) saying Woods was a 'chip-off-the-old block', lost my red grade that I was in line for (already had yellow at first attempt), beat me up and put me on report - no sense of humour...
The screws were ex-services mostly and all wore their own gear, not uniforms if you remember and nearly every one of them wore black Doc Martins shoes. A year later my mates were in Glenochil and the screws were now in issued uniforms complete with the peaked hats down to their beaks and more looking even more intimidating!
