Well Angel might not have had feelings of love for Darla, but he certainly did dote on her. I believe this whole love can only happen with a soul is BS since after all, as you've pointed out, we've had some proof in the past. Though what I really think affects whole a vampire cares for another is how they were when they were alive. See Darla, when she was alive, was loveless and alone so when she became a vamp, she cared for finding someone to fill that void in her heart that carried over from death to rebirth. It's the same with Spike, he was scorned by the person he loved and thus when he became a vampire he still had feelings of love because that was the strongest emotion he had before death. Then when it comes to Liam, well he was always well loved, he had his sister and possibly mother who cared for him. Yet the strongest thing that carried over when Liam died was his revenge towards his father. So it's all about how you were when you were human. Love just wasn't that big of a concern for Angelus as much as seeing the world.
