Though what I really think affects
>whole a vampire cares for another is how they were
>when they were alive. See Darla, when she was alive,
>was loveless and alone so when she became a vamp, she
>cared for finding someone to fill that void in her
>heart that carried over from death to rebirth.

Personally, I think Darla, the first time around was never exposed to love and affection. She saw sex as something to be used and manipulated. She had no concern for others except herself. Therefore, as a vampire sired by the Master, she becomes the ultimate b*tch from hell.

The seond time she dies, she's shown love and affection by Angel as well as someone who was willing to be with her at her deathbed. In 1609, death for Darla meant being surrounded by people who didn't gave a damn about her. In 2000, death meant finding peace and accepting her loss. This peace and feeling loved carried over into her second death, which is why I think Darla's not really an Enemy of Angel Investigations anymore. She's not as evil as she was the first time around and I think that there are stronger *possibilities* for change within her character that just weren't available when she died the first time around.

To answer the original question of whether Angel loved Darla, as I said in a previous post, I think Angel cared for Darla. He wouldn't have stuck by her if he didn't. As for Darla, it was the same, she cared for him. Granted it's not the deeply romantic kind of love that Spike/Dru had or whgat James/Elizabeth had, but there was fondness between those two. I always think back to the look they shared just before Darla runs off with Elizabeth in the Hearthrob flashback. Darla and Angel hold that stare for a good long while, just before breaking off eye contact. I think it was trust that the other would make it out of trouble unscathed.

I think it was only with The Trial that I think Darla might have fallen in love with Angel himself.

This is just a crazy notion, but I don't think Darla wants Angelus anymore. She wants to be loved or at least cared for by Angel and was really, really hurt when he rejected her in Epiphany. This feeling of intense hurt and pain is probably what caused her to become so psycho in Offspring. Now, that she's gotten most of the rage and hurt out of her system (I think), she can at least try to move on to a more amicable relationship with Angel. More than anything, Darla and Angel really need to talk about their issues. There are too many things that are not being said between the two of them, that it's starting to become self-destructive and ultimately not good for the baby. If there's anything I want out of the next two eps is for Darla and Angel to talk and I mean really *talk*. No threats of staking, no fighting, just talking. It's the only way the two of them are ever going to be able to handle the baby and Holtz.

Hmm. I may have just hit upon a reason why Darla really shouldn't be staked. There's just too much stuff that's unsaid between her and Angel to warrant an abrubt and dusty death. Then again, it could add pathos to Angel's hunt for Holtz.

~Khali, who is now looking at the Lullaby pics to brighten up her mood and shut out the "I hate Darla!" crowd.
