I would like to say that Angelus was incapable of love not just because Angel said so but also because the only one Liam loved was his sister, and that wasn't romantic love. I'm just thinking that if Liam never experienced romantic love prior to being turned by Darla, then how could he experience romantic love without a soul?

I've sort of come to the conclusion that in your prior human life you must have experienced some sort of love, in order for this emotion to exist in your next life as a vampire. You take Darla v.1. She was a bitter woman dying at a young age. I doubt she ever loved anyone except maybe a long time ago as a child (love for parents or someone?). So of course in her years as a vampire she was cruel and vicious. But if you look at Darla v.2 who was based on a dying woman who remembered her times with Angelus but also later saw and felt what Angel was willing to risk for her, well, I think she fell in love with him during The Trial.

The Valet: "He's certainly remarkable."

Human Darla: (in a daze) "Yes, he is."

So I guess Darla v.2 has the ability to love--at least romantically from those "The Trial" situations.

Anyway, the "Lullaby" episode description tells us that Darla loves her child and is afraid that she loves her/him only due to the child having a soul. Wouldn't it be a surprise for us to find out that this ability to "love" didn't originate with this child, but actually during those "Trial" hours?

Darla probably doesn't even know this herself.
