Nigel - the focus of the last question is on Canons current capabilities at the time of the case study.

Whether or not you are a technical wizard is irrelevant here - what you should be picking up from the section on page 1048, to which you refer is that Canon demonstrated a skill in combining their capabilities in optics and electronics and predicted a future for this new technology.

Don't get hung up on the technical detail, think strategically - is the process of combining capabilities a useful skill in the IT industry? - would it be useful in the context other industries? As for the content of some of those particular technical capabilities - you can assume the case study has highlighted the issues and skills that Canon were concerned with at that time. In the IT industry as with many other industries - the interesting issue is that the individual technical issue is transient and may be out of date within years weeks or even days - you do not need this detailed level of technical knowledge - just appreciate the nature of this transcience.
