From time to time, I get information hungry and the same old websites get old, so I start looking around for goodies. I've been known to peruse the student website directory to see if I can dig up anything more than a "pictures of me drinking" page, and when I arrived upon "Jason Sheets," whom I knew of at the time through residential life, I figured I'd have some luck.
It is refreshing to know that there are at least 2 or 3 intelligent people in Northwest Missouri and that those people share their opinions in a constructive and intelligent way. The posts on this website are thoughtful, cutting and altogether CORRECT.
Noticing that Jed is also an active participant in the board, I wanted to share a similar appreciation. I believe the Northwest Missourian has just seen its first meaningful bunch of columns about important issues. They were all meaningful to any college audience who gives a damn, well written and refreshing. Rest assured that there were coffee time conversation and were very much appreciated. As you know, it isn't easy being "liberal" at a school with its own voting precinct that went for Bush. For some reason, progressive people have been demonized and most people don't feel hard pressed to have a strong feeling about anything other than the drink special at Molly's, but it would be absurd to assume that one of those drifers didn't "accidently" learn something from you.
So, to people that say what they feel, albeit unpopular, and to you both for doing it so well, thank you. You are not wasting your time.
If we could dig up a few more progressive people, maybe we could make something interesting happen at Northwest. I'm the President-elect (uncontested in court) for the Young Democrats, which indeed does represent the same corporate influence and corruption that plagues our political system, though I'd like to think it exists to a lesser extent. Right now, to me, being a part of interest groups and having meaningful participation in a party that at least does something for the good of our people is the most immediate viable vehicle for change--change in policy, that is, not changes to the core problems that plague us. We do what we can, and I'd welcome anyone to join us in fall if they are surfing through this board and are interested. If there is anything we can do to extend any of the causes you dicuss, or to support any of the organizations you are involved with to a greater result, please let me know. Will Rogers once said: "I'm not a member of any organized political party; I'm a democrat." While it may not be a party that drives us to be passionate about our ideals, we aren't doing a whole lot of good sitting around watching.
I've drank too much coffee today and I'm running amok all over your message board. Sorry about that. Again, thanks for speaking your mind and being who you are in an adverse environment. Talk to you soon.
