who do you guys feel is the best marist basketball player (regardless of sex) while at the school (don't consider what smits did after)?

the most obvious choices in my mind brings it down to smits or fitz. i think what fitz has done at the school has been nothing short of amazing. she is a major college player playing at a mid-major school. marist is lucky to get a player like that. curious to see what you guys think about her as the best player ever at the school.

In terms of pure domination-Smits. In terms of team success-Fitz. I would have to go with Smits because he brought recognition to Marist even 10 years after he retired with the NBA mentions.

Heck, in terms of team success...Viani. I think its a four person list of Smits and Jordan on the mens side and Fitz and Viani for the women.

he achieved enough individually while at Marist to be the 2nd overall pick in the NBA draft. His teams also led his team to the Marist Mens only two NCAA tournament appearances.

Not Viani. Much loved local girl and a pretty good player, but not in the league of Fitz or Smits

maybe I'm biased because I was there at that time but I go with Smits. I remember how much of a force he was and how he dominated games. I also remember how his success started to attract regional(NY Times, etc) then National attention, and clearly remember how big it was when Sports Illustrated came to campus one day to take pictures of him. Jordan, Viani, and Fitz are all in a very special class and played at a level much higher than the norm, but I think Smits' success was far and away on a level even higher than the other three. For what its worth, if you go with a worst player question, my answer would be Rudy Bougarel.

Gots to go with Smits and Fitz... look at the tournament appearances.

Maybe a sub division of Kreskge, Jordan, Kennedy.

Best 12th man? Brendan Copes.

Brendan Copes without a doubt...was anyone else around for his campus television show? Man was a legend.

Worst player...I'll nominate the namesake of a frequent poster...Marko Vucjank.

while i think smits is a great player, fitz is going to set records that will never be broken and may go to four ncaa tourneys. without her, i am not sure they would have gone to any. she is that good. i also remember seeing her in sports illustrated this year as well. did smits ever get to sweet 16 or have marist in top 25?

i think the added attention that mbb gets has to be removed when making the decison and look objectively at what they did individuaaly and as a team.

jordan and viani are not even close. jordan teams did very little other than a decent nit win. viani on a bad team wouldnt be as good. she gets a lot of open shots because of fitz. fitz would dominate anywhere.

i am leaning towards fitz but it is close.

when picking the best individual basketball player. The Marist Women don't get to the sweet 16 without Kresge at the point shredding the MTSU press. So then maybe she is the best player in Marist history. Ronald Moore was arguably the best player over a weekend when his team achieved its greatest accomplishment, maybe ever. Is he the best basketball player in Siena history?

Smits was planning on racing motorcycles in Holland before he was recruited to Marist. 4 years later he is the number 2 draft pick in the NBA. Who else in Marist basketball history has done that?

obviously no one player can carry a team. while kresge had a good career and had a great game vs. mtsu, she obviously lacks the stats to be in the conversation. in my opinion, fitz is the best wbb player i've ever seen in the maac. without her, i don't think kresge ever gets the chance to play against mtsu. without fitz, marist is an above average maac team. with her, they are a powerhouse with the ability to play against "up" competition. not to take anything away from the other team members but fitz opens so much for them because of the defensive focus she commands that makes those around her look better.

as for ronald moore, he is a huge part of the siena team's success, but will never be considered an all-time great at the school. hasbrouck has cemented his place as #3 behind bennerman and brown and just ahead of faison not because of his point totals alone. he had tremendous success as a team as well. i also think he had the best supporting cast in siena history, so to consider him for the #1 or #2 is tough. i honestly think that siena would be maac champs if they put hasbrouck at the point and slid c.jackson into the starting lineup. i don't think they beat osu without moore's heroics though. he makes the players around him better and is an integral piece of the success, but is the fourth, maybe fifth best player on the team. with that said, he may be the first or second most valuable. they are two very different things.

I love the image of 7'2" Rik Smits on a motorcycle.
