Subject: Strange customs of the world

In this series we will be examining the strange customs found in various parts of the world. We start with Manchestershire in England.

This custom derives from a time when fisherman would come back from their fishing trip early in the morning and tie up at the docks. They would gather to talk about the days catch, and if it was good they would hold up their catch by the tail for all to see. Pretty soon this evolved into giving your friends a good close look at your best fish by holding it close to their face, emphasising the quality and smell of your catch. Over time it was thought necessary to show your comrade the quality of flesh and so the fish got closer to the cheek until it actually touched it. Now you could boast about the size smell and texture of your catch.

Well the greeting didn't stop there, and it has now become and age old tradition in Manchestershire. It is become a bit of a trend now to step out, smartly attired in your pinstrip suit, bowler hat, umbrella and briefcase in one hand, and fresh haddock, or mackerel, in the other. Upon seeing your fellow workers ambling down the street on their way to work, you stop briefly and brush each other across the cheeks with your respective fish. If you really know someone well, this evolves into a good slap across the chops with said fishy article.

Upon arriving at work the smell of fresh fish is a sure sign of popularity and social status. While some drop their haddock neatly into a bin, before entering the office, if it is a particularly well used specimen, then you might bring it into the office with you as a bit of a conversation starter.

Viewers, share your strange local customs with us on this forum.

Next week we'll be looking at cheese underpants, which are a local custom of the Lancastorford area.
