Subject: Does Gary Pert even remember where he came from?

From The Age:

"Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert ... told Fairfax Media earlier this month that clubs could resemble 'McDonald’s franchises' if the AFL went too far with equalisation policies."

It sounds to me very much like someone trying to protect their own position of advantage. And someone who protesteth too much.

'McDonald's franchises'? Well it takes one to know one. Doesn't collingwood like to see itself as the champion of the battler? Well, being the biggest spender on the block seems to make you the McDonald's to the Footscray corner burger shop already, don't you think?

Or Fitzroy, Gary. Remember them?

Here's the rub, Gary. collingwood is already a McDonald's franchise. It is hardly a "club" at all. Almost everyone else allows its ordinary members to vote on board members. You don't. You are a big, fat corporation, like, well, a certain burger chain.

Seem to recall McDonald's was even one of those companies contributing to collingwood's monolithic spending until just a couple of years ago.

I'm not sure how much of a spending cap there should be on football departments, if at all. Maybe just a limit on the number of staff in the football department.

But frankly, the opinions of Pert, Newbold and especially Maguire should be entirely taken with a pinch of salt. Especially those of Big Mac-guire, the fat and not-so-jolly clown.
