I could point to at least 4 posts that easily rise to the legal definition of libelous and could easily give ground for a suit that have been made in the past month alone, and its been a quiet month on the board. And yes, I do have the expertise to know the legal definition of libel vs the colloquial use. Ladies, I'd be careful about unsubstantiated libelous statements if I were you. Your identity is easily obtainable for a private investigator's minimum retainer and I'm sure your parents would hate to be slapped with a lawsuit due to your actions. And yes, the law does hold your parents responsible for your actions if you are a minor. With lawyers costing $300+/hour it doesn't take long to financially ruin your family...so before you lie or cast aspersions about someone, think first is all I'm saying. In fact the legal standard to file suit for libel is remarkably low. If those people posting lies and innuendo feel intimidated by the thought of defending themselves to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees because they think character assissination is cute or funny or in some warped way going to win a title, then so be it. The discussion was about THIS board and THESE comments, which some do ,in fact, rise to the standard of libel. And, in my opinion, kindness and civility ought always be welcomed in a public forum, particularly when dealing with people's hopes and dream, not to mention their reputations. Comment on the girls' hair or wardrobes or talent ...fine... but character assissination is another matter entirely and some of the people on this board don't seem to know when they have crossed the line from opinion to libel.
