Subject: 2 Corinthians 1

2 Corinthians 1

Paul is writing this second epistle under pressure from the Holy Spirit. See if you can pick up on this.

1
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:

( This is not of Paul's own will. Before he was struck down on the road to Damascus, Paul had free will, after that, he became a chosen vessel to do the will of the Almighty. Paul is talking to the saints that held the line and kept the faith. Achaia translated means trouble )

2
Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

( Again we see the full title )

3
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

( The comforter is the Holy Spirit. Within this we see the full Godhead. And it's not by accident. )

4
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

( Our Father allowing us to be touched by His Holy Spirit. Keep in mind our Fathers feelings too. )

5
For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

( The more we suffer in His name, the more He comforts you. So be strong and of good courage. Don't be a quitter. )

6
And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

( It was in our best intrest that Paul and others were afflicted. Paul didn't worry about conflict because it was for their benefit and for our example to follow. )

7
And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

( Paul having no doubt that comfort would come to those holding the line, keeping the faith, and induring the persecution. )

8
For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

( They didn't know if they were going to live through it. But here is the answer......... )

9
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

( So we put our trust in Him. And He will see us through. Come what may. )

10
Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

( He does it over and over, again and again. God knows if you trust Him or if your just saying you trust Him. )

11
Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

( When we labor together in prayer, that gift of grace by many persons is the cause of thanksgiving through many for us. In other words God hears your prayers. )

12
For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, ( It's honest )

that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom,

( Not being cunning with words )

but by the grace of God, ( His unmerited favor ) we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

( Paul telling them that the Word of God is honest and trustworthy )

13
For we write none other things unto you, that what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;

( That you have understanding and that there are no hidden messages. Paul tells it like it is. )

14
As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.

( Remember, this is written to the saints and those that follow. They knew Paul was a sent one and rejoiced to have him with them and oh how Paul loved them. )

15
And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit; 16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

( In Pauls coming and going, he wanted to see them again. Anyone following Pauls first letter to Corinthians saw Paul using tough love and wanting them to rejoice with him. )

17
When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

( Do you think I was fickle? Pauls yes was yes, and his no's were no. Period. No messing around. )

18
But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

( It wasn't maybe this or maybe that. It was straight on. )

19
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

( It was a Divine Yes! No fickleness. )

20
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

( "Amen" means "and thats that". All promises are positive. )

21
Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

( God chose the saints. Christ means anointed One. )

22
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

( Sealed them with the knowledge of truth in their minds. I like this word [earnest] in the Greek. It means a pledge, i.e. part of the perchase money or property given in advance as a security for the rest. The guaranty of the Spirit, payed in full by the blood of Jesus Christ. Think about it. )

23
Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.

( Paul stayed away because he would have rebuked them strongly because of what they were allowing to go on in the church at that time. )

24
Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand!

Above all, taking the shield of faith wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

For by Faith we stand. Be strong and of good courage.

May your studies be blessed:
