Subject: 2 Corinthians 2

2 Corinthians 2

1
But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.

( Pauls first letter had an effect on the obedient members of the church, and he wrote a second time to comfort those who were, as well as warn the members that were disobedient. Thats tough love. Paul feels good about the report after his first letter and what he's saying here is he didn't want to cause grief when he comes again, but rather take part in their joy. )

2
For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?

( If he had to chew them out again, that would cause more grief and that would take away Pauls joy. )

3
And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

( Paul wanted them to get things straighted out before he got there )

4
For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

( It hurt Paul to write that first letter. Remember, there were divisions already starting up and the super duper preachers were letting things go on in the church that shouldn't have been allowed. Somes times discipline is tough love. Thats why we are called disciples. We see more and more today the lack of discipline in God's house. Not all of them, but a lot of them. )

5
But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

( Only part of them were being disobedient )

6
Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

( Some stood against Paul. Mostly the super duper preachers who wanted things their way and their hypocracy ( play acting ) rubbed off on some of the members. )

7
So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

( You cant hold sin against someone who repents. It would seem that some churches wont forgive you, but would rather brand you. )

8
Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

( It was Christ that payed the price. Paul is saying, back off and forgive them. )

9
For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

( Paul is testing them here. Pauls love for the Corinthians is very apparent. )

10
To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

( Forgiveness is part of obedience. We do this in the very sight of Jesus Christ. He is always present. )

11
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

( Do you know how to discerne the devices of Satan? Christ told us how to deal with entrapment and such. Sharpen up them skills. )

12
Furthermore, when I came to Troas ( Troy ) to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

( Again we see Paul being pressed of the Spirit. There was work there and the people could see it. )

13
I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

( So Paul takes off to find Titus )

14
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

( You can sense the knowledge of God in someone. God runs the test, and you should be able to spot them. What a wonderful fragrance of learning truth. I like Pauls analogy here. )

15
For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

( You should be able to tell by the countenance of a person whether or not their saved. )

16
To the one we are the savour of death unto death;

( The smell of doom )

and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

( Thats the perfume of victory. And I hope you answered you all are sufficient for this, through Christ. )

17
For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

( And this goes back to verse 10. Forgiveness after repentance. Your purity of honesty should be transparent. All we do, we do in the sight of the Lord. )

God bless your studies.
