Subject: 2 Corinthians 7
In reply to: Zerubbabel 's message, "2 Corinthians 6" on 00:56:15 12/02/02 Mon

From the previous chapter because it leads into the 7th chapter:

1 Cor. 6
16
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17.
Wherefore " come out from among them, and be ye separate", saith the Lord "And touch not an unclean thing and I will receive you,

( This still applies to this day. Otherwise Paul would not have stated it. See Zerubbabels reference to Rev.18:4 )

18.
and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters," saith the Lord Almighty.

( So we have the command given, and the promise given. )

2 Corinthians 7

1
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

( The "flesh & spirit" being put for the whole person. We are cleansed by the Blood of Christ through repentance and faith. The promises having been given in the last chapter in verses 16-18 were quoted from Lev.26:12 and Isaiah 52:11-12 )

Lev.26 ( Remember the Yoke? )
12.
"And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people".
13.
I Am the Lord your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their bondman; and I have broken the bands of your yolk, and made you go upright.

Reception

2
Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.

( There was not one case where they cheated anyone )

3
I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.

( Paul had a big place in his heart for the Corinthians. Paul called them his sons. He felt like a father to them. )

4
Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.

( Inspite of all the tribulation they were going through, Pauls happy. )

5
For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.

( This was after leaving Troas ( 2:12-13 ) . They had all kinds of trouble going on. )

6
Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

( This "casting down" is different. It means "let down". )

7
And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

( The report was good and of good comfort to Paul. )

Effect of the former Epistle

8
For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent:

( It hurt Paul to write that first letter but it was tough love. )

for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.

( They deserved it, but it brought them to repentance. Now they have a new start. Thats the beauty of Chritianity. )

9
Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

( This is the difference between Pauls repentance, and that of the Corinthians. The Cor. were guilty of sin, but Paul of a possible error in judgement. But he was right. The sorrow Paul brought them didn't damage them, but got them back on track. )

10
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

( If you go with the ways of the world, and stay with them, you get death. Go with Christ, and stay with Him, you receive salvation. )

11
For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

( All the faults, they made right. They took care of it. This is a lesson to us to keep discipline in God's house. )

12
Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you.

( He did it so God could bless the whole church. If you let things like this go on in God's house, the whole congregation is going to suffer for it in one way or another. )

13
Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yea, and exceedingly the more joyed we for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.

( Titus didn't beat around the bush. He didn't give up ground, he took it. Making them the stronger and better for it. )

14
For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.

( Paul told Titus that they were good people )

15
And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.

( It was a good experience for Titus. It worked out well for all involved. )

16
I rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all things.

( And Paul here gives them a good complement to uplift them. He knows they can cut it on their own now. )

That was a pretty straight forward chapter. If you have problems in your church, nip it in the bud. Don't let it get out of hand.

May our studies be blessed.
