Subject: 2 Corinthians 8 Part I

2 Corinthians 8 {KJV}

1
Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;

From the Interlinear Bible for clarity:

But, brothers, we make known to you the grace of God having been given among the churches of Macedonia.

( Paul having gone through Macedonia on his way to Corinth. Verses 1-5 are examples of the Macedonians )

2
How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.

( They may have been poor, but they were generous. The knowledge of the Word is our riches. It is the truth, and the truth sets us free and gives us peace of mind. Even through trials of affliction. )

3
For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;

( They were willing to do what they could. They received the Word and ran with it. )

4
Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

( They wanted very much to be a part of the ministry and receive the grace, and let it be known to the saints that were in Jerusalem. )

5
And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

( That was a valuable gift to God. )

6
Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

( So Paul called on Titus to finish the mission he started with them. Here we see Paul planting, and Titus watering. )

1 Cor.3:8
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor.

( The labor you do, is the work you do for the Father. )

7
Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and in word, and knowledge, and in all earnestness, and in your love in us, see that ye abound in this grace also.

( Being carefull of what they learned. This goes for all of us. Be careful of who you listen to. Always check me, or anyone else out in the word. If it doesn't align with all of God's word, than there is something wrong and you need to investigate. )

8
I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

( Teaching others by their example. )

9
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

Hebrews 2
9
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He, by the grace of God, should taste death for every man.

( We see within this that God would not allow man to go through anything that He Himself would not also go through. )

10
For it became Him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through suffering.

10
And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.

Here is the Interlinear translation for clarity:

{ And I give judgement in this, for this to be profitable for you, who began before not only to do, but also to be willing from last year. }

( In other words, they were willing. )

11
Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.

( Seeing how they were willing, they need to be about their Fathers business. To do the labor for Him. This should remind everyone of Mark 13:34 )

12
For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

( To every man his own ability. God gave people what they can take care of. )

13
For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened:

( So a person does what he or she can do, and contribute what he or she can. One body, working together. )

I'll finish the rest of the chapter later on today, unless someone else wants to.

G.B.
