Subject: Sorry--BMF is correct
In reply to: RLG 's message, "Re: That's the ONLY formula that'll work this season" on 07:45:44 11/14/01 Wed

Sorry-- It does not work that way--Its not wins and loses, its WHO you record the wins against--

For an example of what it takes look at collegerpi.com(an unofficial site of what most believe is the RPI formula used by the selection committee)--

What hurt us last year was the low rpi of a number of teams in the conference--Both UCI and Utah State came into the league play with RPIs in the 30s(good enough to be a lock as an at large)--

Irvine went 15-1 and lost only to USU in regular league play--What happened to its RPI? It went from 34th to 54th when it won the league championship--

In fact the last 6 games before the BWC semis, all of which UCI won, resulted in its RPI dropping from 42 to 54--Why?-- because its foes were Cal Poly(2), UCR, Fullerton, and Idaho(plus LBSU--which had a 150 rpi and therefore did not affect UCIs rpi negatively)--All of those teams had RPIs of 200+ and resulted in UCI's index dropping(so that even if UCI got to the finals against USU it may not have gotten a bid since its RPI would still have been in the 50s--and look at the RPI site as to what happened to teams with RPIS in the 50s)

This in not a knock on any of the schools listed above with high RPIs--goodness UCI was a large part of the problem for a number of years--It just illustrates that ALL the teams need to improve, schedule and occasionally beat better opponents and thereby improve the conference overall rpi--

Two teams with 20+ wins means nothing unless they both have an RPI of less than 50 and that only happens if most of the league is with an rpi of less than 150(with over 317 Div-I teams that means somewhere in the top 1/2)

Lesson--Root for all the BWC teams out of league!!!!
