Last year I successfully grew tomatoes in pots. They are actually big bucket things with rope handles sold at various stores that I'd put holes in the bottom of. In the bottom of the pot, I dumped in coffee grounds and egg shells, then covered with good potting mix, and planted the tomatoes so the roots weren't in immediate contact with the stuff that needed to break down. Worked out well. Maybe I'll figure out how to send you a picture of the tomatoes.

Tomatoes are very heavy feeders. Mine got water from cooking pasta, more coffee grounds worked into the soil on top (again avoiding the roots) and more egg shells as the summer went on. Watering can be tricky. Don't let them dry out but don't keep them too wet. You can do it! I know you can!
