Fortunately i didn’t screw up the information - the photograph appears on page 155 of Colgate’s 1967 yearbook:

Maybe that’s not actually an “M” on the side? Or maybe one player wore an “M” for some unknown reason?
I rarely pay any attention to football uniforms, but do sometimes to try to identify an opposing team. There are some stripes on the sleeve of the player in question which could prove diagnostic.

My guess is that it was a preseason scrimmage game. The white jersey has no stripes, which we assume the road jersey would have been the same design as the home (dark) jersey (back in those days), and there are no fans in the stands. And in preseason scrimmages, the teams don't necessarily wear their regular-season jerseys, anyway.
