UOP nears decision on next hoops coach

The search for University of the Pacific's next women's basketball coach is nearing conclusion.

Pacific athletic director Lynn King said Thursday that four candidates have been interviewed and a decision will be made soon, perhaps in the next few days.

''It could be over the weekend,'' King said. ''There are a couple more things I need to get done.''

King confirmed that Pacific assistant Craig Jackson, Pepperdine assistant Jody Wynn, UC Santa Barbara assistant Cori Close and former Nebraska coach Angela Beck have interviewed for the job.

Beck is the new name among the group.

The former head coach of the San Jose Lasers of the defunct American Basketball League currently works as an account manager for an internet company in Texas.

She has ample collegiate coaching experience, including an 11-year stint (1986-97) at Nebraska, where she compiled a 191-128 (.599) mark and led the Cornhuskers to three NCAA Tournament appearances and one WNIT appearance. She also coached Bradley University to a 38-44 record from 1983-86, and Southeast Missouri State to a 54-34 mark (.613) from 1980-83.

Beck graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., in 1980 and earned her master's from Illinois State in 1981.

Jackson was an assistant for Sherri Murrell at Pacific the past four years. Murrell resigned in March to take over at Washington State. Wynn has been at Pepperdine for six years and Close has spent seven years with Mark French at UC Santa Barbara.

''Our program is not where it was four years ago, and that's a credit to Sherri, her staff and the players,'' King said. ''It's in much better condition and at a much better state of development. We're looking for someone who can take the talented players we have now and move forward.''
