Subject: Close Passes Up Pacific Opportunity!
In reply to: TitanCzar 's message, "Re: Close Offered Pacific Job!" on 00:09:27 04/22/02 Mon

Read the following in today's SB News Press online:

-------------
Close stays with UCSB: Corie Close has decided her
heart still belongs with the UCSB Gauchos and has turned
down an offer to become head women's basketball coach
at the University of Pacific.

"I battled in my heart all weekend," Close said Sunday
night. "For personal and professional reasons, I feel
I'm in the center of where I should be."

Close has been a Gaucho women's assistant coach for the
past seven years. She is a 1992 graduate of UCSB. She
has been involved in all seven of the team's appearances
in the NCAA Tournament as a player or coach. Her current
title as Mark French's top assistant is Associate Head
Coach.

She said the chance to run her own program at Pacific
was hard to pass up.

"The opportunity was fantastic," Close said. "This is
nothing against Pacific. They're going to do great
things. (Athletic Director) Lynn King has them going in
the right direction."

Close informed King of her decision Sunday evening.

The UCSB coach was one of four candidates interviewed
by Pacific. The others were Craig Jackson, an assistant
with the Tigers; Pepperdine assistant Jody Wynn; and
former Nebraska head coach Angela Beck.

The job opened up when Sherri Murrell resigned last
month to take over at Washington State. Murrell led the
Tigers to a second-place finish in the Big West behind
UCSB this season.
------------

I'm happy she is staying; although, I believe she could
have made great strides at Pacific. Hopefully Jackson will
get the head coaches job. Of course, I'm not familiar with
Wynn or Beck. I just think that Jackson shows a strong
committment to the program the players won't need to make
to many adjustments to a new coach.

Whom ever Pacific hires as Head Coach, I'm hoping that
Pacific will continue to make strides and become a much
better program.

Good luck in the hiring and see you on the court next
season.

>>I have to agree with you on both counts.

>>Corrie definitely seems to have the apptitude for a
>>Head Coach. The past couple of years, I've been
>>wondering how long she would stick around before
>>heading off on her own.
>>
>>I think Close stands an excellent chance of increasing
>>her stock if she sticks with the Gauchos another two
>>to three years and they are able to get to the Sweet
>>16 or beyond. With Coaches jobs always in flux as they
>>are, I'm sure another position would find its way to
>>her.

>>However, I also think it could be a big plus for Big

>>I for one would like to see the Big West Women's
>>Basketball return to glory and surpass the '80s. It's
>>possible and hopefully not just a pipe dream!

>>Good Luck in her decision.

>I think it's possible but unlikely. The reason I say
>this is because during the 80's must schools didn't
>give a damn about women's sports. But the bigger
>schools are putting big time money into the women's
>sports and face it the BW can't compete. Oklahoma was
>nothing even in the early 90's but the huge football
>money and Coach Choale has turned that into a great
>program for example.
>
>Now there's no reason why the BW can't be a stronger
>conference. We could be in the 10-15 range in
>conference RPI. But schools need to make a stronger
>committment to WBB and that covers everything from
>facilities to hiring good coaches to actually giving a
>damn about WBB.
>
>It's going to take a long time for this to happen. It
>doesn't happen overnight. But it starts with school
>giving a damn and hiring good coaches for BW to
>improve. UOP hiring Close would be a good choice.
>But I think Jodi Wynn would be a better choice. But
>UOP couldn't get hurt either way.
