Subject: More on Thomason and OSU
In reply to: Tiger Casey 's message, "Re: Thomason to speak with OSU" on 10:31:53 04/03/02 Wed

Here is an article from today's Record that clarifies some things about Thomason's status as a candidate for the OSU job. Also, it clarifies some of the questions I had about recruits from yesterday's Record article.

Coach still waiting to hear from OSU

By Bob Highfill

Record Staff Writer

Bob Thomason said he is ''intrigued'' about the Oregon State men's basketball coaching job, but as of Wednesday afternoon, hadn't heard from the Pac-10 school.

Thomason, who's guided Pacific to a 222-185 record in 14 seasons, also said he has deep roots in Stockton and at Pacific and that he isn't actively seeking another job.

''I really like Stockton and I love UOP,'' said Thomason, who played basketball and graduated from Pacific in 1971. ''I love the kids we have in the program, and I like who we have coming in. I think we'll be pretty good, but I'm going to take it one step at a time.''

Oregon State athletic director Mitch Barnhart didn't return a phone call Wednesday, but on Tuesday, Pacific athletic director Lynn King said an official from Oregon State requested permission to speak with Thomason -- a common courtesy and a sign the school is interested.

Thomason said he bumped into Barnhart at the airport in Atlanta after the Final Four earlier this week, but that nothing substantive was discussed.

''I don't know what's going to happen next,'' Thomason said. ''I guess I'm waiting to hear from them. That's probably the next step. It's always a compliment to be considered, but Stockton's been my home, and I really enjoy it here.''

Thomason, who has one year remaining on his current contract, is among an ever-changing gaggle of candidates, whether real or rumored. Barnhart publicly has said he is no hurry to name a replacement in light of Ritchie McKay's sudden and unexpected departure last Thursday to New Mexico after only two years in Corvallis.

According to an article in Wednesay's edition of The Oregonian (Portland), the Beavers already have spoken with Arizona assistant Jay John and Oklahoma assistant Ray Lopes, who accepted the Fresno State job on Wednesday. Metro State coach Mike Dunlap had an ''informative'' meeting with Barnhart on Saturday in Atlanta. Dunlap has guided the Denver school to two NCAA Division II titles in three years, including this season.

Former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson, who led the Razorbacks to the 1994 national championship, reportedly has been mentioned as a long-shot candidate, though he said he hasn't been contacted about the job.

Wyoming coach Steve McClain said he isn't interested, as did UC Irvine coach Pat Douglass, who signed a multi-year extension with the Anteaters last year. Cal State Northridge coach Bobby Braswell reportedly is being considered, but he couldn't be reached for comment. UC Santa Barbara coach Bob Williams, a fan favorite on some Oregon State internet chat roome, recently signed a four-year extension. He also didn't return phone calls.

Oregon State standout Lester Conner, an assistant with the Boston Celtics, and Milwaukee Bucks assistant Don Newman, who has worked at Washington State and Oregon, have been mentioned.

Thomason said he's close to wrapping up the recruiting process for the upcoming season. The winter signing day is Wednesday. The Tigers have received verbal commitments from guards Myree Bowden and David Doubley, and center Tyler Newton. Redshirts Miguel Flores, Miah Davis and Christian Maraker also will join the fold.

''It's a pretty solid group,'' Thomason said. ''Potentially, they're pretty good.''
