Pacific falls to Long Beach

The Record

The University of the Pacific women's basketball team missed an opportunity Friday night, and now the Tigers will just have to put it behind them.

Pacific trailed by one with 36 seconds left but failed to score again and lost to Long Beach State 77-72. The Tigers (13-10, 8-4 Big West) will finish their three-game trip on Sunday at UC Irvine.

''I just don't think we did the right things at the right times to lock in the win,'' Pacific coach Sherri Murrell said. ''But this team does a good job of bouncing back.''

The Tigers trailed 73-68 but cut the lead to one with 1:32 left after Dolinda Meeker made a jump shot and Vanessa Dupont a layup. Point guard Selena Ho had a steal and was fouled with 36 seconds remaining. She went to the foul line but missed both free throws.

''We had our best free throw shooter at the line to win it, but the ball didn't bounce our way,'' Murrell said. ''It just didn't go in for Selena this time.''

Dupont grabbed an offensive rebound but missed a jumper with 15 seconds left. The 49ers (13-10, 9-3) made 4-of-6 free throws in the last 11 seconds to seal the win, and Tamara Inoue made 3-of-4.

Long Beach State led 40-36 at halftime, but the Tigers built a 66-61 lead with 7:30 left. The 49ers went on a 12-2 run to take a five-point lead.

''That run was crippling to us,'' Murrell said. ''We had a five-point lead, and we made some bad decisions.''

Gillian d'Hondt scored 17 points to lead Pacific, and Nancy Dinges had 15. Ekuah Ramsey scored 21 points for the 49ers.
