No. 1 Bruins tame Tigers

The University of the Pacific men's volleyball team gained a measure of satisfaction and hope for the future after a hard-fought, four-game loss to UCLA on Friday night at Spanos Center.

Matt Komer had 20 kills and Cameron Mount had 18 to lead the No. 1-ranked Bruins to a 34-32, 29-31, 30-20, 30-26 victory over the No. 15 Tigers.

"Despite our record, I'm so proud," said Pacific coach Joe Wortmann, whose team is 3-11, 1-9 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. "We came out to play. It reaffirms the fact we're a good team and gives us some hope for our remaining 12 conference matches."

The Tigers were as close to full strength as they have been all season. The one player who was ailing, junior outside hitter Martin Berntsen, had 20 kills and hit .438. Berntsen played with a heavily taped right (attacking) hand, which he injured during a match with Springfield College on Feb. 8.

"Martin had a marvelous match, and it was good to see that," Wortmann said. "He had a great blocking and serving match, so it must not have been bothering him too much."

UCLA (12-1, 7-0) concentrated on stopping Pacific's leader in kills, Aaron Wachtfogel, and did a good job. Wachtfogel, who averaged 4.4 kills per game, had 11 for the match and hit .032. Senior middle blocker Dan Hoefer picked up much of the slack with 22 kills and a .302 attack percentage.

"Hoefer was real hot and we had a hard time stopping him," said Bruins' coach Al Scates, who owns 18 NCAA national championships and 21 overall national titles. "He carried them through Game 2, then we switched Mount on him and stuffed him real good."

Mount, the AVCA national player of the week last week, hurt the Tigers serving, as well as attacking. He had three aces for the match, and in the third game, recorded eight consecutive service points to give the Bruins a commanding 23-12 lead. He had an ace during a five-point run in Game 4 that gave UCLA an 18-13 advantage.

"Mount got them in a whole lot of trouble serving the third and fourth games," Scates said. "He was ripping serves at their libero in the back row. He kept it up in the fourth game like he did in the third."

Wortmann said his team's passing was a factor in the match.

"I think we could have won if we passed better," the Tigers' 10th-year coach said.

Pacific served three times to take Game 1, but UCLA fought through them, then scored consecutive points on kills by Rich Nelson. The second game was tied 29-29 when Wachtfogel recorded a kill, then setter Chris Tamas and opposite Tim Gerlach combined for a game-ending block.

Pacific hit .315 for the match, while the Bruins hit .391. The Tigers had more digs (41-37), with Tamas contributing a match-high 10. He also had a match-high in assists with 65.
