It seems superPAC behavior, being directly driven by big money fatcat$$$ (who themselves mostly happen to fall high on the pathological narcissism scale - sociopathy being only a small [and egregiously odious] subset of the narcissism pathology) is predictably driving the current predominance of ATTACKATTACKATTACK sleazoid smearfest practice in the reptilican primary (contrary to Reagan's adage to not effectively eat yourselves from inside the party).

The typical narcissistic 'mindset' (naked greed, aggression, lack of empathy or compassion) skews toward hate rhetoric, manipulation, misdirection, swindling, fear-mongering, coercion & abusive personality traits (also the characteristic tone deafness & lack of grass roots cooperation & understanding).

In the absence of a similar nominating environment due to demoncrat incumbency, such current lopsided concentration of habitual internecine scorched earth infighting & backbiting by the reptilican prospective nominees is currently highlighting the perception of predominance of such tactics toward the R 'way' & much more heavily identifying these practices in the current mindset of JQP and turning off the overall electorate in "the middle" towards the republican party as an aggregate entity.

On a 'collective' level the R party seemingly behaves allegorically more or less like an abusive BPD stripper wife/girlfiend, attempting to get their way via intimidation, coercion, swindling, lies, bait & switch, holding their breath, abusive behavior, blackmail, brinksmanship, etc.

This is totally in line with a narcissist/sociopath needing to create an inner mental dynamic of seeing themselves as "victim" (and identifying & manipulating that in the target audience of 'dupes') in order to effectively sell that to the mark(s) as a way of maintaining the time-honored "pity ploy" strategy.
