I get the feeling we never really intended to keep Spikes at all. The transition tag was probably little more than a marker -- as in the opportunity to bring him back if there turned out to be little market for him. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but it does look like a mistake. Maybe it's just a wide receiver thing, but if other teams were willing to give Price and Coles huge contracts and forgo a first rounder, then the market was probably there for Spikes as well.

In the end, I'm betting that the "trade" of Spikes for three defensive starters will be a win for the Bengals.
