... that altruism isn't in your own self-interest and acting in that fashion, especiallly if you adhered to the ideals of self-responsibility (after all, if you take care of yourself, as is your #1 right and responsibility as a citizen, then you wouldn't be dependent on others, i.e. 'society', another form of 'altruism' ) in those you choose to assist. this all seems very in line with the philosophies of Wayne Dyer, who wrote those Erroneous Zones series of self-help volumes. anybody else familiar with these?
