they all do this country (and themselves) a tremendous disservice. I meant get over the poor Trent Lott as the innocent victim of a double standard schtick.

FYI -- The Democrats should have denounced Senator Byrd's stupid comment. But Trent Lott should've paid attention to Byrd's reaction to his gaffe. His office issued a full apology hours after the statement was made. Trent would have been wise to do the same rather than waiting and hoping that it would go away, and then issuing a half-hearted apology when it didn't go away.
