She reacted to his velveteen touch by sidling closer, longing to be near him. He did not have to worry about rushing her; she had waited just as long as he had to be with him again. And now that she was, she had no intention of letting this moment pass them by without jumping at the opportunity.
Sensing his tension, she gently reassured him that it was okay to ‘let go.’ He was a strong individual, he always had been. But perhaps he was trying to be too strong. She did not need him to bear both of their burdens. She could help him, if he’d let her. In fact, she wanted to help him. They were both in pain, neither one of them completely understood life’s reasoning but she doubted if either on would question it. She was grateful; she did not need to know why. She would not ask why, she would accept it as fate. It was meant to be, it had been meant before they were even born.
“Fox… Can we go somewhere else, please? I want to be alone with you, -just like old times.”
Yes, just like old times only it couldn’t be just like old times. No matter how much she wanted it to be, it could never be just like old times again. They weren’t children anymore; they were older now, and more grown up. Fox had a life of his own, one that didn’t include her. And she was trying to start over again. They’d never lose sight of that rambunctious colt and shy, little filly; it would always be a part of them, a part of who they were. But now there’d always be ‘strings-attached’. If they were seen together too often horses would begin to speculate, and the last thing that Charity wanted to do was ruin his good reputation. To put it bluntly, they were no longer innocent. Perhaps they never had been, but now it was more noticeable.
But she needed to talk to him, and she could only image what he had to tell her. Rush had been kind to her, and she hated to leave him, but she hoped he would understand. And she hoped that they would have a chance to further introduce themselves later, at another time when it was more convenient. Right now though, Fox deserved her full attention. And she’d give it to him.
