Charity eyed the other mare with mild curiosity. Who was she? She had overheard what she had said, and wanted to congratulate her. But she still didn’t know who she was. Oh well, she’d get to the bottom of it eventually. She wasn’t going to let it stop her. She’d introduce herself as informally as she had to. What were names? What significance did they play in our lives?

“I’d congratulate you on being chosen as our new Gamma Mare, but unfortunately I have no name of which to call you by. Nevertheless, I know you must be deserving of such an honourable position. Desert Fox and his sister, Yukon would not have chosen rashly. I assure you my dear; there was quite a deal of thought put into this decision. And as such, I expect only great things from you. I’m certain you’ll make us all very proud.”

It was indeed an honour. Personally, Charity didn’t think she’d want such a position. Or that she’d be good at it. Perhaps it was a lack of confidence in herself and her own abilities, perhaps it was a fear of commitment or maybe it was something else, something altogether different. Either way, she hoped Fox hadn’t had the notion to promote her. She was quite content being a Subsequent Mare, at least for the time being. Subsequents did not demand respect or recognition, but without them the herd would be non-existent. It made her wonder if she’d ever be ready to accept such a responsibility. And if so, when?
