I went to Wyland the year it was opened. Mrs. Gill was the principal and no body messed with her. I had Miss Majors for 5th grade, I believe. She was strict, but she was the best teacher I ever had. I remember the math teacher at Ritenour Jr, he carried a yard stick and would use it too. He let you chew gum in his class but you'd better never blow bubbles or pop it or else he'd hit you with the yard stick and you'd have to put the gum on your nose. He was a nice old guy, just can't remember his name at this minute.
I remember being in social studies class in the high school, 5th hour, and we got the news President Kennedy had been shot. I can't remember his name either but he spit when he talked. We went to 6th hour class after they told us about Kennedy, and there wasn't a peep in the halls. The whole school went to their next class without talking or yelling. The biology teacher didn't know what to do so she just talked to us about it and didn't give us any homework.
And who could forget the hamburgers and fries at the Handy House! The best ever! I had a young girl as me a few years ago if there really was a Handy House, she had heard rumors about it, and I told her all about it. She was amazed as I told her about the jukebox, dancing, the food, candy counter, and RC Cola being the best bargain. The sloppy joes and Boston cream pies were worth eating in the jr high lunch room if you couldn't get to the Handy House for lunch.
