The concessionary smart card scheme to be introduced in Greater Manchester will be the largest smart card scheme in the UK to date with 600,000 dual interface smart cards to be issued initially. The card capabilities are being built to ITSO specifications.
------------------------------------------------------------
A bureau service will be established during the migration to smart cards, which will include the cardholder’s photograph and other identification details.
------------------------------------------------------------
Following the introduction of the system the bureau service will be replaced by 15 issuing and imaging stations that will operate within Greater Manchester.
------------------------------------------------------------
Smart card processors are being added to the 1,900 buses operated by Stagecoach Holdings plc and FirstGroup plc in the Greater Manchester area and to the additional 800 buses provided by other private transport operators also in this area.
------------------------------------------------------------
ERG’s software will be deployed by Prepayment Cards Limited (owned by ERG,FirstGroup plc, National Express Group PLC, Stagecoach Holdings plc and the Sema Group UK Ltd) to process card transactions and for the daily settlement of monies between operators.
------------------------------------------------------------
Beginning 2002 smart cards will be sent to concessionary travellers or will be available for collection from Post Office branches.
------------------------------------------------------------
Cardholders will be able to add value to their cards at any of 800 point-of-sale terminals at Post Offices in Greater Manchester.
------------------------------------------------------------
The introduction of this sophisticated ticketing system will enable approximately £48 million of subsidies paid each year for concessionary travel to the private transport operators to be based on actual usage figures rather than estimates.

Friendly Cove is a historic place with beautiful beaches and much to see. This is the sheltered bay, showing the manned light house.Friendly cove is on a point. Not even 5 minutes walk from the dock to see the open ocean and beautiful beaches of colourful, highly polished and smooth pebbles, which feel neat on your feet. |
