Following Successful Trial Singapore System to be Operational by end of 2001.

Following Successful Trial Singapore System to be Operational by end of 2001 In 1999 the ERG Motorola Alliance won a contract in Singapore to design and install an integrated smart card ticketing system for the Land Transport Authority. On 30 March 2001 ERG assumed full responsibility for the project which will include a complete smart card issuing, settlement and clearing system and 22,000 smartcard processing devices throughout Singapore’s rail, light rail and bus fleets.

-------------------------------------------------------

During the second half of 2000 approximately 118,000 contactless smart cards were issued for use in two major trials. More than 17 million transactions were generated during the trial of the rail system which operated on a limited number of gates across the entire Singapore Mass Rapid Transit network. Following the success of the trial the Land Transport Authority accepted the system enabling the project to proceed to the next phase - the complete development of the system.

------------------------------------------------------

A second trial commenced in November 2000 and involves buses operating on selected routes intersecting with train stations enabling passengers to experience the benefits of a multi-modal transport system. Buses in Singapore will be among the most technologically advanced in the world and will utilise a GPS vehicle monitoring system and wireless LAN technology. At present, public transport travellers purchase and load value to a magnetic stripe ticket. When passengers board a bus they insert their ticket into a validating machine and select a fare in accordance with the distance they intend to travel.
