In response to emails on this...

-Jostling: any further info on this would be greatly appreciated. We had the first of 2 National League Tournaments in Wellington this weekend and were cornered into putting a verbal limit of 1/2m on jostling. After having teams attend the last 3 Australian IS, we were getting a lot of blatant tackling and pushing of players.

The rule is there, you can't just shove someone around like people do, but like the 1m restart, it's just not called - or at least called very little. Obstruction is called more, but whenever I do it I get quite a bit of grief (and I do call it a lot, especially against the Brits - to the extent of team Greens and then Yellows).

Something to consider - if the jostled player fights back for position, in any way, most believe that they can continue to be jostled, no matter what the outcome (even capsize) - until they are out of court or outside the 6m. In other words, the jostled player has to stop paddling to draw the call (I?m not saying that that's the rule, just how it is).

It's also probably timely to remind refs that players cannot contact another player?s body with their boat, or tackle off the ball (a lot of severe jostles can be ruled as tackles - even if the kayak goes under the opposition?s kayak - getting rid of half your jostle problem). Also refs need to watch for paddle leverage off opposition boats (and bodies). And while you're watching all that, keep an eye out for holding paddles (with hands and paddles) and striking players hands with paddles. Now, if you can control all of that, then the jostling will be much more controlled and easier to call.

Good luck! Marty (Bell)
