Squad As it stands now:
Gavin Brunton
Aaron Jacobs
David Oosterdijk
Karl Reece
Paul Hardy
Jason Papps
Jason Juno
Cameron Butler
Eoin Whelan
me - James Mitchell
Well that's the squad as it stands now. Firstly I am proud to be part of this squad, while it's not an ideal squad from my point of view, these guys are all committed to the "cause". They deserve all the help the rest of NZ can give them. But does that mean we should give these players an automatic entry into a team to play Australia? Absolutely not!! Here are a couple reason's why I think this should be the case:
- What about the rest of the men playing in NZ? Are these guys to be excluded because they don't have $6000 to go to worlds? Lets make the sport accessible to these guys too! I know many of these guys personally and feel they are behind the "cause", but through personal circumstances can't afford the money or the time commitments. We need these guys to have a carrot to achieve (and stay in the sport).
- From a personal point of view, I want to see how I stack up against the best of the best, I want to earn a spot over/with the likes of the Nick's , Dean's and Troy (if he ever plays). The reality is that I could not do much in the way of extra training and still expect to be named in the worlds squad (of course I will train, because i don't want to waste all that money). By opening up the selection to the rest of the country, I actually get a chance to be pushed for a place in a NZ team. To me this has much more personal worth.
- I actually hope that the Autralian Tour squad is made up of mainly world's squad players, but let us earn this right.
- Two separate tours: two different goals. Worlds = development. Australia= to do the best we can.
