I was asked to provide information on behalf of Northern women, about the proposed National League. The following summary is what I have ascertained from emails and telephone calls. Please note, that it is only a representation of those players who have made the effort to respond. In one instance, I was asked to put a player's opinion on the forum because she did not have access to the web.
Please also note, that although my personal opinions are available on the forum, I only showed the players a possible budget, the proposal format, and an email from Troy with a discussion document. One player asked me to send her the posts from the forum, which I did.
The questions asked were:
1. Would the Northern Region womens squads commit to this format ?
2. What areas/clubs in the Region would field wmns teams and how many per area (eg Auck?, Tauranga?, Hamilton?, etc?)
3. Other comments?
RESULTS:
At this stage, it appears that there is only one Women's team from Northern prepared to attend the National League.
Of those women, many are concerned that the 40 minute game format will be detrimental to performance at International level, because the international game is 20 minutes. Some also state that the NZ women's style of play is too slow and defensive, and needs to be faster and more aggressive before we can succeed at the World Cup. They believe the 40 minute format will not promote a faster, more aggressive game.
As far as travel is concerned, players would prefer to travel once a month. If they had to travel one weekend, host the next, and then have a weekend home, they would rather it were over a limited time than over the whole year.
The concerns listed have been:
Amount of distance to travel
Lack of time at home
Cost of competing (related to travel, accommodation and pool fees)
The need to provide top level polo regularly, to succeed overseas
The need to look after local leagues and local players who compete socially
Some suggestions have been:
To have two 20 minute games instead of 40 minute games
A three month period where players spend at least one weekend a month at home, and perhaps travel or compete every fortnight
