Thanks to all of those who competed at the Art Deco comp in Napier this weekend. Apart from a couple of minor hitches, I thought the comp went off really well:
A huge thank you to the organisers, and those players, parents and friends who gave up their time to take care of the scoring and timekeeping.
Just a note re restarts. There has a been a bit of confusion, not least of which was mine!!
I'd like to apologise for one of my main errors in refereeing over the weekend. I had a quick look over the rules when I got home and realised what the wording regarding restarts was:
"The ball is not back in play until it has travelled at least one metre
horizontallybeyond arm's reach of the restarting player or changed possession
to one of their teammates.
The restart throw must be taken within five seconds of a player being in
possession of the ball and in position to take the throw, and the player taking
the restart may not play the ball again until the ball is back in play.
Infringement is a violation, Signal 12 applies. Any intervening dropping or
fumbling of the ball is disregarded, providing a legal restart throw is taken
within 5 seconds.
For all restart throws, including Goal Penalty Shots and Centre Restarts, no
opponent may contact the restarting player's body, kayak or equipment, or
attempt to be playing the ball until the ball is back in play. A player must be
allowed to take up their position to take a restart throw. Infringement is a foul,
Signal 12 (14) applies."
Basically, I gave players 5secs from when they were stationary and in a position to take their restart, to do so (a few of you lost posession due to thinking your 5 secs started from when you held the ball up)
When really, Your restart had to travel 1m beyond arms reach on your first throw (as the rule states the player taking the restart cannot play the ball again until it is back in play)
I would like to apologise for my error.
Thanks to those who gave feedback on my reffing over the weekend.
Do people think the wording of the rules needs to be updated? I have found in Australian comps and international comps, that our use of this type of restart sets our players at a disadvantage.
Basically, it seems with ICF and particularly ACF, that as long as the player moves the ball the required 1m within the 5secs alotted, then the restart is legal.
eg.player takinga restart from a corner, doing 2 quick dribbles within 5secs to move the ball the 1m, then shooting!
