Subject: Thomas Rowbotham, Macclesfield, Butcher, c1819

I have been unable to get beyond my gt gt grandfather Thomas ROWBOTHAM and would be grateful for information anyone may have that could help me.
Thomas was born in Hurdsfield (1851 Census) or Prestbury (1881 Census)c1819. He married Ann ARMETT on 18th October 1840 in Prestbury. According to the marriage certificate his father was Thomas ROWBOTHAM, a Cotton Spinner.
I cannot find any other reference to his father, Thomas, and do not know if he had any brothers or sisters.
He had several children, Alice Ann, Martha Maria (married Edwin SWINDELLS), John Thomas (married Sarah MORTON), Abraham (my gt grandfather)(married Hannah BURNES) and Elizabeth Ann.
Abraham moved to South Wales sometime after 1901. John Thomas remained in Macclesfield as a butcher, and later cattle dealer, and in turn his son William carried on the family business as a butcher in the town.
Any contributions gratefully received!

Hi Bob,
I do note in the records of the website is an entry for Thomas Rowbotham baptised 15th November 1818 at St Michael's in Macclesfield, son of Thomas a collier and Ann Rowbotham of Hurdsfield

Dear Mike
I did see that entry and it is the only one that might fit. However, Thomas's marriage certificate clearly states his father's occupation as "cotton spinner" which seems a long way removed from collier. Unless of course one of the records has mis-transcribed cotton or collier. Something not impossible in longhand!

Dear Bob,
Just a thought!
From birth to marriage is a relatively long time, being a collier can only be imagined as a difficult job then as it is now, and becoming harder as the years went by. It would have become more appealing to become a cotton spinner in an area where silk and cotton spinning jobs would have been plentiful and money regular.
An injury may have forced him to change.
