CHAPTER 5

“Alright, kids you ready,” I asked as I strolled out into the hallway right at 7:30 as planned. Lance whistled as I joined them and I rolled my eyes.

“Look who’s all dolled up,” Chris said.

“Haha, enough, let’s go before I eat my hand,” I joked. We made our way into the elevator and hopped into the truck waiting for us. Because we had gotten in early, I had some free time to primp myself so I dried my hair straight and I decided to veer away from the jeans and t-shirt look I had nailed and opted for a simple khaki dress. It was a nice way to remind myself that I was indeed a girl. We all joked and talked the entire way there, even Justin loosened up a bit and was joking with the guys. I had told them where we were off to and they all seemed excited.

“Okay, so Sonali, do you mind if I ask what the deal is with the bracelets,” Joey asked.

“Nope, I don’t mind. I wear them because it’s part of my culture. It’s tradition for young, unmarried girls to wear thin gold bangles and once they get married, they wear bigger ones.”

“Interesting. Can you take them off?” I laughed.

“Of course. But only if I’m dressing up for some special occasion or if I am sick to death of wearing them, but that happens very rarely.”

“I see. I feel more cultured now,” Joey joked. We laughed and stopped once we pulled up to the restaurant. We headed inside and were overwhelmed with the aromas of all the spices, all too familiar for me. It wasn’t too crowded and no one really seemed to notice the guys, for which they were grateful for. We sat down and I the guys and I looked at the menus.

“Okay, Sonali, we have no idea what to order, so you take command. We trust you,” JC said. I laughed and placed our order with the waiter, speaking in Hindi. Once I was done, I was met with 5 very surprised boys. I smiled.

“What?”

“Oh come on. Where the hell did that come from Sonali,” Lance said.

“Well, I can speak Hindi, what’s the big deal?”

“It’s not, I guess. Just that you never stop with the surprises,” Chris said.

“Well I aim to please,” I joked.

“Sonali?” I turned around and jumped up from the table.

“Preeti!”

“Sonali, what are you doing here? I mean, oh god, it’s been forever,” Preeti said. I hugged her.

“Tell me about it. I’m here for work for a few days. How the hell have you been?”

“Really well. I guess it is true, your job that is,” she said, looking in the direction of the guys.

“Gosh, where are my manners. Let me introduce you. Preeti, this is Chris, Lance, Justin, JC and Joey. Guys, this is one of my oldest friends, Preeti,” I said.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you guys,” she said with a smile.

“Likewise. So tell us something embarrassing about Sonali,” Chris said. I gave him a look and everyone started laughing.

“Where do I start,” Preeti joked.

“Well pull up a seat and join us,” JC offered.

“Oh I wouldn’t want to interrupt,” Preeti said.

“Preeti, get your butt over here,” I said.

“Well I can’t argue with that,” she said. She pulled up a seat and joined us.

“So how long have you known each other,” Lance asked.

“Since middle school. Then she moved away after graduation and has been getting amazing jobs,” Preeti said.

“Oh believe me, the discount I had at Coach was unbelievable,” I joked.

“Hey now, we’re not THAT bad,” JC said.

“You’re right. You’re worse,” I joked.

“Awww, Sonali, give them a break. They seem nothing but sweet to me,” Preeti said.

“Because they’re out in public. But when they’re in the comforts of their bus, it’s long gone. It comes down to Sonali, fax this, Sonali, get me a pizza, Sonali, where are we headed to next,” I joked.

“We say please every now and then,” Lance said.

“Guys, you know I’m giving you a hard time. These boys are sweet as apple pie and I love working with them,” I said with a smile.

“Awww shucks,” Chris joked. We all started laughing. Our food came and I explained what each dish was before we all dug in. After a bit, we started talking again.

“So Preeti, seriously, we need some dirt on Sonali. Tell us something funny,” Lance said.

“You know, I have every number to every tabloid,” I said.

“Hey now, don’t go there,” Chris joked.

“Well, there was this one time in high school when we had to do a dance,” Preeti said with a smile. I groaned and knew there was no turning back now.

“Oh this already sounds good,” Joey said.

“Yeah do tell,” Justin said, adding to the conversation for the first time. I looked at him and for a split second, it seemed like we were okay. But then I was snapped back into reality.

“Okay so it’s out Senior year and we were doing this Indian dance for a cultural program for school. So we’re in our Indian outfits – big long skirts and these mid-drift shirts that expose more than I would like at times. The skirt tied on the side and there was a lot of heavy embroidery on it and Sonali failed to tie it properly since we were being rushed onto the stage. Midway through the performance, her skirt comes undone. Luckily she caught it before it fell completely to the ground but she ran off stage to fix it and then got back out there.” Preeti and everyone else was in hysterics by the end as I sat there, red as a tomato.

“Haha, laugh all you want. I’m sure you’re not perfect on stage either,” I said.

“Oh we’re not. The amount of times we’ve gone out there with out flies open, man I’ve lost count,” Lance said. We al cracked up.

“Mmm, this food is really good. Good choice, Sonali,” Joey said.

“Thanks, glad you like it.”

“It’s spicy,” Lance said as he took a sip of his water.

“Not spicy enough for me,” I said as I got the waiter’s attention and ordered a side of chilies. He returned in a few minutes and all the guys looked at me.

“Sonali, can I have one,” Preeti asked.

“Sure,” I said as I handed her the plate. I took one myself and started eating.

“You girls are crazy,” Chris said. We both started laughing.

“Well what can I say? I like my food spicy. It’s better that way. You boys are all wimps,” I joked.

“Wimps my ass. Gimmie one of those,” Justin said, reaching for the plate.

“Justin, seriously these are spicy. I don’t think you can handle it.”

“Listen to the girl,” JC said.

“Whatever, I can handle it,” Justin said, reaching for the plate. He took the biggest one and shoved it in his mouth. I tried to grab the plate from him but he continued to shove chili after chili in his mouth until Joey managed to knock the plate out of his hand. We stared at him, wondering why he’d do such a crazy thing. Well we kinda had an inclination – because I said he couldn’t handle it. He stood up and stormed out of the restaurant, getting a few looks on his way out.

“Um, well I guess dinner’s over,” I said softly, breaking the silence.

“Like hell it is. Let him act like a fucking three year old. Excuse my language, Preeti,” Joey said.

“It’s okay,” she said with a smile. Suddenly we all cracked up one we really realized what had just happened.

“That boy hasn’t even BEGAN to feel the real pain. Thank god he has his own room with his own bathroom,” Chris said. We all laughed harder.

“And the thing is, no matter how much water or milk he drinks, it won’t help. There’s this concoction as I like to call it, that my mommy told me about. Why don’t you guys finish up here and meet me at the hotel. I can’t enjoy my dinner knowing how much pain he is in right now. Preeti, why don’t you hang out with me tonight so we can catch up,” I said.

“NO! She’s hanging out with US so we can hear more about you,” Joey said.

“Alright, come hang out with US tonight,” I said.

“Sure,” Preeti said.

“Good good. I’ll see you in a bit then, back at the hotel. Joe, can I have our room key?”

“Yeah, I can’t believe you’re ditching us for Justin.”

“C’mon, you know I pushed him. It’s partly my fault so let me fix this fiasco.”

“Alright doll, we’ll bring you back the left-overs,” JC said.

“Thanks babycakes,” I said as I walked out and got into a cab. Oh boy, this was going to be mission fucking impossible. Once I got to the hotel, I went to the front desk and asked for a key to Justin’s room after I provided the necessary credentials. Then I called up room service and asked for limes and sugar. They asked if I meant salt and laughed and told them no, sugar is what I needed though salt would have been better if we were doing shots. Once that came, I squeezed the limes and put some sugar in then finished off by adding water.
I headed across the hall to Justin’s room and knocked on the door. I heard him come to the door on the other side to see who it was.

“I’m not talking to you,” he said. I rolled my eyes.

“Justin, come on. I have something that will bring relief. And I have a key so I’m coming in whether you like it or not,” I said, using it to open the door. I saw him pacing the room, face red, obviously in extreme discomfort.

“Out. Now.”

“Sit down,” I said, ignoring him. He glared at me as I sat down on the bed.

“You know, you have a lot of nerve. Get out of my room.”

“Not until you let me help you. Please sit down,” I said in an even tone. He ignored me and continued to pace for a good 5 minutes. I sat and watched him until he finally sat down in a chair. I got up and made my way over to him. I bent down so I was level with him. I carefully took a spoonful of the liquid and offered it. He slapped my hand away. Another spoonful. Another slap. Third spoonful, third slap. Another spoonful but this time he slowly opened his mouth and let me feed him. And again, until relief washed over him and he relaxed. I set the bowl down and got up to leave.

“Sonali, wait!”
