She sat huddled in the corner of the car, as far away from him as he could get, evidently. Latent feelings for the woman – unwanted, sympathetic feelings – tried to surface, but he quickly squelched them. She had certainly never considered his feelings. He pulled in front of the Marriott Hotel. “Why are you stopping?” Her voice held a hint of panic. Did she think he was going to ravish her as soon as they got to the room? He parked the car. Probably. Maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea. She was huddled as far away from him as she could possibly get in the confines of the car. Fear could be a great motivator. “We have a lot of catching up to do.” He reached out to touch her arm and noted her slight stiffening with a sense of satisfaction. “We could catch up going down the road. The long drive would give us a time for a good visit.” “Yes, it would, but I couldn’t give you my full attention. In the room, I’d have nothing to distract me.” Her crest-fallen expression told him she was thinking the same thing. “But don’t you need to get back to the office? I’m sure they need you.” “My father is running the office. He’ll be fine.” “But what if . . . .” Michael opened the car door. “Good. So it’s settled. We’re staying here.” He circled the car and opened her door. She followed his lead and offered no other protest. Hand against the small of her back, he guided her through the lobby toward the elevators. Niki spoke before he punched the up button, her words tumbling out in a rush. “Our room? We didn’t get a room?” He pulled a room card from his pocket. She dropped her eyes and stared at the floor. They didn’t speak again until they reached the room. “No. Wait, Michael.” She laid her hand across his arm as he moved the door card toward the slot. “You don’t really want me in your life. Can’t we talk about this?” He looked down at her hand. Must be feeling desperate to have actually touched him. “We had miles to talk, Niki. Why didn’t you want to talk then?” She looked up at him and back down. “I didn’t really think you’d go through with it. I mean, I thought you were bluffing.” “Really?” He didn’t try to hide his surprise. “What did you think I’d do?” She gave him a shy smile. “I thought you’d probably rush me to the nearest jail and file charges.” He flashed the card and opened the door. “Let’s talk inside.” He pushed open the door and guided her inside. The suite gave no indication that he’d spent the night there on the previous evening. She sat down on the edge of the couch. He could see the relief in her expression and guessed she had expected to be faced with a king-sized bed in the middle of the room.
