LOL Fu, you're doing a paper on the popularity of Reality TV and I'm doing a paper on the popularity of Lord of the Rings... Ah, mass culture... LOL
I'll confess. I used to watch reality tv. What kind do you mean though? Like do you mean like the "Real TV" that shows people getting hurt, or programs like "The Real World"? I think the reason why I used to watch Real TV was genuine curiosity. Before that show I had seen a grand total of two car accidents in my life (not counting tv/movie fakeups.) I had never seen boat accidents or plane accidents with real people, or anything like that. I stopped watching for several reasons. I started to notice how that show kind of blurs the lines between real accidents, which one should be upset about, and fake Hollywood accidents, which one can blow off and laugh at. Everyone I respected (parents, friends, etc.) were totally turned off by the show. It doesn't seem quite right to be entertained by dozens of 30 second clips of people getting hurt, does it? And, in the end, you can't really tell one clip from the next.
Now shows like "The Real World" or "Road Rules" I watched probably for the same reason why people watch soaps. I was interested in watching the people interacting. I stopped because in the end, it disintegrated into shows about shallow people fighting about the stupid things other shallow people did. I liked the early shows, when people actually seemed to be friends and to work as a team. The content of the shows changed though - suddenly all the hype was about the bitching and bickering, and that's all there was. The fact that the shows were of course not "real" in any normal sense (I mean, seriously, how real are you going to be with a camera in your face 24/7?) was never a turn off for me.
Now shows like Survivor, or Temptation Island were never interesting to me. I viewed them as a complete waste of my time. By the time it escalated to The Bachelor and American Idol, I was completely turned off. It felt like tv had reached an all time low. Why I felt that about Survivor, Bachelor, etc, but not other reality shows at the time I watched them, I'm not sure. I don't watch any reality shows anymore, or at least not regularly. Sometimes if I'm surfing and the Osbournes is on, I'll stop and watch. The other show I still enjoy is The Amazing Race. I love all the different places they go to (maybe it's a hangover from my childhood love of Around the World in Eighty Days.) But they haven't had that show on in quite a while. So, there you are. I hope this helps somehow Fu!
